Watch for crocs!

Watch for crocs!

I got off the plane and set foot on Cairns at about 5:40 PM. I immediately realized how humid it was. That said, I changed into my swimming shorts at the airport and decided to walk to my hotel, the old school way. A hundred meters down the road I realized that the humidity was just unbearable. It’s like nothing I’ve ever felt. Sweat was pouring down my face as I was walking down the road. I tried to hitch a few times, but with no luck. I spotted a path and decided to walk down it…and it was then I realized how amazing this place is! I walked through a small section of tropical rainforest and saw some of the most unusual plants and some crustaceans. I saw one similar to a crab. I got to the point where I didn’t care how freaking hot it was; it was more about how amazing this land is! I walked the full trail (about a quarter mile) and then continued toward my lodge. As I kept walking I took pictures of the street signs just to show where I’ve been. About a half hour after leaving the airport, I made it to Sheridan Street. I stopped at the first convenience store I saw and I got a Diet Coke. I was really exhausted and not feeling well. I was hoping they have Grain Waves chips here like they have in New Zealand, but they don’t. I left the store and I kept on walking down Sheridan Street. I wasn’t even sure what the address of my lodge was, but I spotted it along the way. So, I stopped and checked in. The girl at the reception desk is stunningly attractive. Her name is Michelin, but she’s married. This lodge has a very unique tropical setting. It’s perfect for these hot conditions. I went and put my stuff in my room and decided to go walk around. I was starting to feel extremely tired. The fatigue from all the flights had set in. I got some fish and chips at a stand and sat down and talked to a few people. After eating, I went searching for an internet café. I wanted to go swimming in the lagoon at the waterfront, but it was too late. I found an internet café and stopped in and emailed everyone. I saw that the Lakers won also, beating the Mavericks and ending their winning streak. Afterward, I walked back to my room. My feet were aching and I was exhausted. I was going to jump in the pool, but I was so tired and there was no one else swimming. I then went up to my room. I noticed as I was walking in the hallway that lizards crawl around on the wall. That makes the tropical setting even more unique. My room actually has no carpeting because it gets so hot here. It’s a tile floor instead. At least I don’t have to worry if I get water all over the floor. I washed my shirt and socks and then I lay down. I’ll see you tomorrow.
