saga of the teeth - updated by Carol

I wrote this in considerable discomfort/pain last week so today I will rewrite it so it makes more sense.

I started to get a pain in my face, up the left side of my nose. It was so bad that some guys from the Gathering took me by car into the emergency department of the hospital. The doctor gave me antibiotics and painkillers and said something about adenoids.

The swelling went down and I had a few days feeling ok again. Then I was eating peanut brittle (who can refuse that) and one of my mollars broke off, only the back part of it remained so I headed in to see the dentista. Meantime the pain in my face started up again. The dentist was away until the next day and when I got to see her the pain had generated itself into a bubble of absess on my gum. When the receptionist saw that she immediately rang the specialist who came in to help me. She is a young mexican and very professional. I had to trust her which is difficult when a person is approaching you with a drill saying 'this won't hurt' and is planning to drill a hole right where you have a terrible pain! However she explained it all and she was right, the nerve was dead and she drilled a hole into the back of the tooth and it is draining. She also wrote a prescription for antibiotics to take over the weekend before seeing her again.

On the Monday I went back to her and she anaesthetised the area and drilled out the tooth and put in more medicine right up into the jaw. The bubble has gone down but I can feel there is still a sensitive spot in my gum by my nose. Now that the pain of that is getting sorted I have the pain of the broken tooth to keep me occupied. Thank heavens for 8 hour full strength Tylonol, believe me pain is debilitating and tiring!

Tuesday - The broken tooth also needs a root canal and crown. The cost of the two root canals is to be 4200 pesos, the post 1000 and crown 3000 and white filling 700, a total of 8900 pesos or approx NZ$1200. Am reeling from the shock, thank heavens for credit cards, but I guess it would be much more expensive anywhere else. Does anyone know of the cost of getting a root canal done in NZ or USA or anywhere else? It would be interesting to compare...  I have another appointment this afternoon and again at 8am in the morning then the last ones on Friday.

All finished now and feeling fine!

Just the crown would cost $1000 in the states, let alone the root canal. Prices will get cheaper as you go south I expect. I had a crown and root canal in Ecuador for real cheap once. Antibiotics will take care of the absessed tooth temporarily and you mightn't have a problem for a while, thought you'd eventually have to have something done. Good luck!
