Disappointing Final Stop on Lake Balaton and back to Budapest for a Day Trip to Szentendre

The next morning we got back on the train to continue our anti-clockwise journey around lake Balaton. The plan was to spend a night in Siofok before heading back to Budapest. Unfortunately, Siofok was shut during the off season and in the season I'm sure it is not our sort of place. You couldn't walk along the lakeshore as there are lots of bars and restaurants which were all closed. The only eating options were takeaway kebabs so we were happy to move on the next morning. The winery of our new favourite wine was close by and we contemplated backtracking to visit and to pick up a couple of bottles to take back to Romania. However, seeing as everything seemed to be closed, we guessed it would be an unfruitful journey and decided to plough on to Budapest. . We arrived early in Buda and luckily our apartment was ready for early check in so we could drop the bags and explore. We hadn't stayed on the Buda side before and it is much quieter and nicer. We walked around the old part and along the Danube but it really is a big noisy city so we decided to head out on a day trip the following day. Only 19km north of the city is the lovely small town of Szentendre, a popular excursion from Budapest and the train took about 40 minutes. It is well worth the visit as it is a lovely old town set on the banks of the Danube. We enjoyed wandering around and had a wonderful meal in the restaurant above the wine museum ( closed unfortunately) which was a fantastic end to an unplanned trip to Hungary.
