A Gander at Garda

Italy | Thursday, January 5, 2023 | 30 photos

Lake Garda is probably more famous and popular than even Como so, even though you could do a day trip from Bergamo we decided to stay a couple of nights on the lake to do it justice. We got the train to Descenzano del Garda and were soon checking into our apartment in the centre of the old town. Again we have got lucky with a super gaff in a great place. It was a short walk down to the lake for a potter along the shore. We had a couple of beers in the Angelino Circolino , which was round the corner from our apartment and was an AC Milan sports bar . What luck as City were playing Chelsea the next evening. Milan had just won when we arrived so everyone was happy and the owners were so friendly and welcoming. They gave us some snacks with every beer and promised to put the match on for us the next night. We found a cheap local place for dinner on the lake, and I think they were closing up but no bother , they served us a delicious meal. We headed out to explore the lake early the next morning and took the ferry to Srimione. Finally the weather was on our side and beautiful blue skies greeted us. A lovely breezy boat ride across the lake dropped us at Srimione which is one of the most popular places on Lake Garda and it was pretty busy. There is a reason why it is so touristy - it's a dam fine place. We enjoyed looking around the town and taking in the views before having lunch and a beer by the lake. We got the ferry back and decided to take a stroll along the lakeside path from Descenzano to the next village along. A very pleasant walk and we stopped off for a glass of wine and again were given more bar snacks. But this time a full platter of meat, cheese, olives and sandwiches. What a friendly place this is. Of course we ended the night back at the AC Milan bar and they were waiting for us to watch the City game. They were rooting for City and again kept on giving us snacks with each round. We didn't have to buy a meal on our last night in Italy thanks to the generosity of the Italian people. City won and we had a great time with the locals. You must call in here if you like beer or football. A great way to end our Italian adventure. We headed back to Bergamo by train to get the flight back to Timisoara the next morning. The Italian lakes really do stand up to the hype even in poor winter weather and Bergamo is an amazing place to base yourself.
