Photos: Disappointing Final Stop on Lake Balaton and back to Budapest for a Day Trip to Szentendre

The next morning we got back on the train to continue our anti-clockwise journey around lake Balaton. The plan was to spend a night in Siofok before heading back to Budapest. Unfortunately, Siofok was shut during the off season and in the season I'm sure it is not our sort of place. You couldn't walk along the lakeshore as there are lots of bars and restaurants which were all closed. The only eating options were takeaway kebabs so we were happy to move on the next morning. The winery of our new favourite wine was close by and we contemplated backtracking to visit and to pick up a couple of bottles to take back to Romania. However, seeing as everything seemed to be closed, we guessed it would be an unfruitful journey and decided to plough on to Budapest. . We arrived early in Buda and luckily our apartment was ready for early check in so we could drop the bags and explore. We hadn't stayed on the Buda side before and it is much quieter and nicer. We walked around the old part and along the Danube but it really is a big noisy city so we decided to head out on a day trip the following day. Only 19km north of the city is the lovely small town of Szentendre, a popular excursion from Budapest and the train took about 40 minutes. It is well worth the visit as it is a lovely old town set on the banks of the Danube. We enjoyed wandering around and had a wonderful meal in the restaurant above the wine museum ( closed unfortunately) which was a fantastic end to an unplanned trip to Hungary.

Photos: Kicking on to Keszthely

We hopped on a bus from Balatonfured and were soon being dropped off in Keszethely, a larger town on the southern end of the lake. We were staying in the old town which is a 20 minute walk from the lake shore and had a wonderful apartment for our 3 day stay. We planned to use the town as a base to explore the area. It turns out that Keszthely is a lovely old town with a large square and plenty of old fancy buildings, the fanciest being the Festetics Palace. It turns out that the place was almost deserted and hardly any of the restaurants were open. I imagine it would be rammed in summer but this suited us.We spent the first afternoon wandering around and luckily we found John's Pub which was not only open but served fantastic food and had a lovely Hungarian white wine on their list. White wine in Eastern Europe is usually on the sweet side for us, but Bujdoso Kapitany was delicious and became our favourite. The grape is Irsai Oliver, so we were look out for that in the future. The next day we went back to the bus station and travelled to the village of Szigliget, which was a mouth full to say to the bus driver. We had come to visit the old fortress and it was brilliant, nicely restored, the right amount of information in English and cracking views of the lake and the countryside. We spent quite a while wandering the ruins and finding out the history before strolling around the old village. Our final day in Keszthely and the weather was set to be fine so we headed out for a hike. After a trudge to the edge of town we were then on a jeep track in the forest enjoying the sunshine and the solitude. We wer aiming for the village of Vallus but there were many well signed trails so a haven for hikers like us. At Vallus we headed up a steep incline to find an observation post. The views as you would expect were great and we enjoyed a well deserved rest and ate our picnic. From there we trekked along a ridge and then back down towards the lake at Balatongyork. Amazingly we found a lakeside restaurant open and we enjoyed a cold Dreher as reward for our 25km walk. We jumped on the tiny local train back to town and all in all we loved our time in Keszthely.

Photos: Circumnavigating Lake Balaton starting in Balatonfured

Our planed trip to Jordan had been curtailed due to Wizz Air, so seeing as we were supposed to fly out of Budapest we decided to explore a bit of Hungary as we had only previously been to Budapest. Lake Balaton, not far south of Budapest and one of the largest lakes in Europe seems like an ideal destination. The plan was to take it slowly, stopping off at a few places around the lake. Being winter we were going there out of season which means that many places could be closed and it might be a bit chilly. However, I think the lack of crowds and cheaper costs probably outweigh the negatives. We got the train from Timisoara via Budapest to Balatonfured. A pleasant enough trip without any vistas to write home about. Balatonfured is a nice enough town on the lake with a purpose built marina and quite a few restaurants although it didn't have much soul. One day we took a bus ( Hungarian public transport is excellent and cheap) a few kilometres along the lake to Tiihany. This beautiful medieval town is located on a peninsular and well worth a visit. We spend a wonderful day walking around the peninsular and up the hill to the old village with it's 18th century church. There were outstanding views across the huge lake and we enjoyed wandering the narrow cobbled streets looking at all the traditional houses. After a very tasty meal we headed back to Balatonfured but with hindsight we would have based ourselves in Tihany.

Photos: Hiking around Borlova and Muntele Mic

Emma got a bonus long weekend from school for the Unification of Romania day so we put our thinking caps on to see where we could get to on the limited transport options from Timisoara. We came up with going to a small village called Borlova and doing some hiking around there and up to the ski resort of Muntele Mic, weather permitting of course. We got an early train to Caransebes and, amazingly, the sun was shining as we disembarked. Borlova is 16 km from Carensebes and of course no buses on a Saturday or Sunday so we set off walking - well that was the point of the weekend anyhow. We had a quick look round Carensebes, which seemed a nice enough town but no reason to linger before hitting the round towards Carensebes. As we were heading towards a ski resort I thought we would be climbing but the road was pretty flat and the surrounding scenery was pleasant rolling hills. Not an ideal walk as there was some traffic, a random stranger stopped to offer a lift and then a parent from Emma's school saw us and offered a cheat option, but we decided to carry on. After 3 an a half hours we arrived in the small rural village of Borlova. There is not much there but it was a nice escape from the city. Our guesthouse was fantastic with a nice terrace overlooking the garden and we were alle to rest our legs sitting in the wintery sun. The next morning we set off early to hike up the mountain to Muntele Mic ski resort. It was a lovely walk through the forest but we missed the turning onto the ridge and had an unnecessary detour of 45 mins! We back tracked and headed up the ridge and the track was pretty steep as we climbed about a 1,000m in altitude. We eventually hit the snow line and then soon after the tree line . Now we could see our destination and wonderful view back down the valley. We tromped into the ski resort and found a rather shabby place with many of the hotels half built or falling down. There wasn't enough snow for skiing but there were quite a few families who had brought the kids sledging. We found a restaurant that was open and had a delicious bowl of pork and bean soup. Just what we needed as it was freezing. We didn't fancy the walk back down so we managed to hitch back, a kind family from Timisoara taking pity on us. The twisting twining round is a lot further in distance than the walk up but we were grateful for the lift. We celebrated with a couple of beers and the football back at the guesthouse before heading back the next day. The owner of the guesthouse insisted on driving us to the station. Romania people really are very kind.

Photos: A Gander at Garda

Lake Garda is probably more famous and popular than even Como so, even though you could do a day trip from Bergamo we decided to stay a couple of nights on the lake to do it justice. We got the train to Descenzano del Garda and were soon checking into our apartment in the centre of the old town. Again we have got lucky with a super gaff in a great place. It was a short walk down to the lake for a potter along the shore. We had a couple of beers in the Angelino Circolino , which was round the corner from our apartment and was an AC Milan sports bar . What luck as City were playing Chelsea the next evening. Milan had just won when we arrived so everyone was happy and the owners were so friendly and welcoming. They gave us some snacks with every beer and promised to put the match on for us the next night. We found a cheap local place for dinner on the lake, and I think they were closing up but no bother , they served us a delicious meal. We headed out to explore the lake early the next morning and took the ferry to Srimione. Finally the weather was on our side and beautiful blue skies greeted us. A lovely breezy boat ride across the lake dropped us at Srimione which is one of the most popular places on Lake Garda and it was pretty busy. There is a reason why it is so touristy - it's a dam fine place. We enjoyed looking around the town and taking in the views before having lunch and a beer by the lake. We got the ferry back and decided to take a stroll along the lakeside path from Descenzano to the next village along. A very pleasant walk and we stopped off for a glass of wine and again were given more bar snacks. But this time a full platter of meat, cheese, olives and sandwiches. What a friendly place this is. Of course we ended the night back at the AC Milan bar and they were waiting for us to watch the City game. They were rooting for City and again kept on giving us snacks with each round. We didn't have to buy a meal on our last night in Italy thanks to the generosity of the Italian people. City won and we had a great time with the locals. You must call in here if you like beer or football. A great way to end our Italian adventure. We headed back to Bergamo by train to get the flight back to Timisoara the next morning. The Italian lakes really do stand up to the hype even in poor winter weather and Bergamo is an amazing place to base yourself.

Photos: A Soggy day on Lake Iseo

We woke to more rain and clouds but we thought we couldn't just hang around Bergamo so we decided to go a day trip to Lake Iseo despite the inclement weather. We got a bus through the industrial suburbs of Bergamo to Clusone. I'm sure Clusone is a very nice place but we didn't hang around too long as there was a bus to Lovere living in an hour. To be fair that was enough time to wander around the narrow streets of this small town. The local bus to Lovere was fun as everyone on the bus knew each other and were gossiping away. The driver seemed to be very popular. The journey would be stunning in good weather as the bus wound its way down switchbacks towards Lovere on lake Iseo. Lovere is another lovely lakeside town with the usual cobbled alleyways and churches. We enjoyed wandering around the town and along the lakeshore. We had a soggy picnic by the lake before admitting defeat and getting the bus back to Bergamo.

Photos: A Meander around Milano

The new year started with miserable weather so we decided to explore another city instead of the countryside. Milano is only an hour away from Bergamo by train so we shuttled over there to check out the city of fashion. We arrived at Central Station which is anything but and it was a soggy walk into the old section of the city, Duomo. We strolled past the famous Scala Opera House, which turns out to be a very underwhelming building ( from the outside) , can't even compare to our Timisoara Opera House ! We followed the crowds through an incredible arcade to be spat out in Plaza Duomo which is dominated by the gigantic cathedral. Despite the weather the area was really crowded but we were glad to see the gothic monolith. The Christmas market was still up and running so we sampled some local delights and they were much better priced than the ridiculously expensive markets we visited in Budapest and Vienna. We soon had had enough of the crowds so left to explore another area of the city. We found ourselves outside Castello Sforzesco and we really enjoyed wandering around the courtyard and through the gardens at the back. Best of all, it was free, you just have to pay for the museums but they were closed anyway. After that we wandered to Brera, a nice area with cobbled streets and lots of restaurants. People were queuing up in the rain for certain fancy eateries so we sat in a hole in the wall gaff and had a delicious calzone and an original Peroni beer for a fraction of the cost. We realised we could catch a train back to Bergamo from the Garibaldi gate station which was much closer than central. We enjoyed our brief mooch around Milano but were hoping the weather improves in the next few days so we can see more of the lakes.

Photos: Commanding Vistas of Lake Como

Bergamo is a fantastic place to base yourself in order to make day trips to the world famous Italian Lakes. So as we were in the neighbourhood, it made sense to check out if they stand up to the tourist hype. We got a train from Bergamo to Varenna with a quick change in Lecce. The train station was a short walk to the lake and the stunning scenery surrounding the lake answered our question immediately. It really is beautiful and we were lucky that the clouds had dispersed for the first time since setting foot on Italian soil. Varenna is a lovely little town with cobbled streets and alley ways. We wandered along the lake walkway and hiked up a trail through the trees to the castle and back down to the lake for a coffee. Next we hopped on the ferry to Bellagio and it was god to drink in the vistas from the water although the clouds were gathering again. Bellagio is another small town but was more touristy and despite the season, it was fairly busy. After another wander around the quaint town and a lunch and vino blanco on the lake shore it was time to get the bus to Lecce. The Arriva bus arrived on time and the journey was lovely as the road hugs the shore of Lake Como and Lake Lecce. We were deposited at the train station, but we had enough time to wander through the pedestrian streets of Lecce and down to Lake Lecce shore. Lecce is more functional and less of a tourist trap but still pleasant enough. Back on the train to Bergamo to see in the new year.

Photos: Spending more than a Mo in Bergamo

With the limited flight connections from Timisoara we have found ourselves transiting through Bergamo airport on numerous occasions without every stepping foot in the city. Well I did have to stay 1 night near the airport once but the old town situated on top of the hill always looked tantalising from the airport. So this time on our way back from Lanzarote we decided to stay for a few days to explore the city and the famous Italian lakes not too far away. Bergamo turned out to be a fantastic city. We had a lovely apartment right in the city walls of the old town and we really enjoyed exploring the small streets and city walls as well as the new town further down the hill. unfortunately, the weather was pretty grim and we didn't get to appreciate the views of the surrounding countryside but we still had a ball in Bergamo.

Photos: Chasing the Sun in Lanzarote Again

After our brief view of Valencia we were soon back in Lanzarote to relax over the festive period. We enjoyed relaxing by the pool at the villa, eating tapas in Tias, hiking around the lovely village of Femes and a Christmas day walk from Porto Calerio to Purto Del Carmen before getting the boat back. My mum and brother came for our last couple of day and it was good to see them but of course tinged with sadness as Brian wasn't with us this time.

Photos: A Brief View of Valencia

We were chasing the winter sun again by escaping the eastern Europe climate and heading to Lanzarote. As always we had to make a stopover somewhere and this time Valencia seemed the best option. The time of the layover meant we had enough time to catch the metro into the city ( 20 mins) and explore around the old town. I had been to Valencia before but that was probably over 35 years ago so it so like a new city for me as well as Emma.
We only had time to look around the impressive market hall and the old churches in the centre. The sun was shining and we were able to enjoy a Valencian traditional , paella, while serenaded by a bull fighter singing viva Espania! We really liked the vibe in the city and would have loved to explore more and go down to the beach and the port area. However, it was soon time to head back to the airport. maybe we will come back for a longer visit and i reckon it's a great alternative to the crowded Barcalona or Madrid for a city break.

Devin Castle is a short bus ride from Bratislava ( 20 mins and less than a Euro) and is well worth the trip. The weather was against us again but I guess that kept the crowds away and we had the place to ourselves. It was a great place to explore and there was enough information boards to give you a sense of the history. The views of the Danube were lovely even in the grey cloud.

With Vienna only being an hour on a regular train service from Bratislava it would have been rude not to take a day trip. Unfortunately, the weather was awful, it was freezing and a mix of snow, sleet and rain followed us around all day. Vienna has some amazing, huge, over the top buildings and are really impressive. However, we preferred the smaller old town of Bratislava. We took in a few of the famous Christmas markets but the huge crowds and high prices put us off. I'm sure it would have been a much better trip in good weather though.

Photos: A Break in Bratislava

A long weekend break in Romania gave us the chance to explore Bratislava in Slovakia. We got the train from Timisoara to Budapest and changed there for the trip to Bratislava. We loved the old town and the castle on the hill and the city is well worth a couple of days exploration.

Photos: Road Trip back to Cape Town to Fly to the UK

It was all to soon that we had to be heading back to Cape Town for our flight to the UK. We decided to make a bit of a road trip of it stopping off in a few places along the way. SAN Parks were having a 40% off sale on their accommodation so we decided to take advantage of that and stay in some of the amazing chalets that we wouldn't have normally been able to afford. The plan was to head along the coast and stop off first at Tsisikamma NP. We love this place and we bagged a fantastic ocean view chalet. We had a short walk to the Storm's River and were on the look out for dolphins but unfortunately they didn't put in an appearance. From there we headed inland along Route 62 to Barrydale. The coastal road is lovely but we prefer the wide open landscapes of the inland route to Cape Town. We had passed through Barrydale before but never stopped and it turned out to be a great place to spend the night. We think veered back towards the coast and headed down to Swellendam and we spent the night in Bontebok National Park. Another little gem of a park and we were the only people staying in the camp. The chalets have an amazing view of the Breede River and the Bontebok even came to our chalet to say hello. We then moved onto Cape Agulhas via Witsand where the whales didn't show up. We had been to the southern tip of Africa before but never to Cape Agulhas Np just a few kilometres further on. We had saved the best accommodation till last as the chalets over looking the ocean where incredible. We spent our time on the deck whale watching - yep they turned up at last and we also hiked one the trails for spectacular view of the park. It was then soon time to head back to the airport and our flight to the UK. We will hopefully be back in SA soon and definitely not a two year wait!

Photos: Back in Bathurst for the first time since the pandemic.

After not being able to visit South Africa for 2 years due to the pandemic we were so happy to be heading back to Bathurst but also a bit apprehensive about the state of the old cottage at Morley house after being shut up for 24 months. The cottage was almost hidden by bush and was a bit dusty to say the least but not too bad considering. It took a few days to get things back habitable and then a few weeks work on the garden and sorting out lots of stuff. We really enjoyed being back and was great to see all our friends again and had a great time in The Pig and the Plough. It wasn't all work and we had a few days off from sorting out MH , going to Addo and Mountain Zebra national parks and enjoying the beach at Port Alfred, Kenton and Cannon Rocks.

Photos: Stopping in Betty's Bay and Hermanus on the Way to Bathurst

After not being able to visit South Africa for 2 years due to the pandemic we were looking forward to our trip back to Bathurst to see friends and to check on Morley House. We landed in Cape Town to a huge deluge and quickly made our way to Hermanus via popping in on the penguins at Betty's Bay. Luckily the weather improved the next day and we enjoyed walking the coastal path in Hermanus. Unfortunately, the whales didn't come out to play but we were very happy to be back in SA. After a couple of days we made the long drive to Bathurst.
