Commanding Vistas of Lake Como

Italy | Saturday, December 31, 2022 | 15 photos

Bergamo is a fantastic place to base yourself in order to make day trips to the world famous Italian Lakes. So as we were in the neighbourhood, it made sense to check out if they stand up to the tourist hype. We got a train from Bergamo to Varenna with a quick change in Lecce. The train station was a short walk to the lake and the stunning scenery surrounding the lake answered our question immediately. It really is beautiful and we were lucky that the clouds had dispersed for the first time since setting foot on Italian soil. Varenna is a lovely little town with cobbled streets and alley ways. We wandered along the lake walkway and hiked up a trail through the trees to the castle and back down to the lake for a coffee. Next we hopped on the ferry to Bellagio and it was god to drink in the vistas from the water although the clouds were gathering again. Bellagio is another small town but was more touristy and despite the season, it was fairly busy. After another wander around the quaint town and a lunch and vino blanco on the lake shore it was time to get the bus to Lecce. The Arriva bus arrived on time and the journey was lovely as the road hugs the shore of Lake Como and Lake Lecce. We were deposited at the train station, but we had enough time to wander through the pedestrian streets of Lecce and down to Lake Lecce shore. Lecce is more functional and less of a tourist trap but still pleasant enough. Back on the train to Bergamo to see in the new year.
