Circumnavigating Lake Balaton starting in Balatonfured

Hungary | Monday, February 20, 2023 | 5 photos

Our planed trip to Jordan had been curtailed due to Wizz Air, so seeing as we were supposed to fly out of Budapest we decided to explore a bit of Hungary as we had only previously been to Budapest. Lake Balaton, not far south of Budapest and one of the largest lakes in Europe seems like an ideal destination. The plan was to take it slowly, stopping off at a few places around the lake. Being winter we were going there out of season which means that many places could be closed and it might be a bit chilly. However, I think the lack of crowds and cheaper costs probably outweigh the negatives. We got the train from Timisoara via Budapest to Balatonfured. A pleasant enough trip without any vistas to write home about. Balatonfured is a nice enough town on the lake with a purpose built marina and quite a few restaurants although it didn't have much soul. One day we took a bus ( Hungarian public transport is excellent and cheap) a few kilometres along the lake to Tiihany. This beautiful medieval town is located on a peninsular and well worth a visit. We spend a wonderful day walking around the peninsular and up the hill to the old village with it's 18th century church. There were outstanding views across the huge lake and we enjoyed wandering the narrow cobbled streets looking at all the traditional houses. After a very tasty meal we headed back to Balatonfured but with hindsight we would have based ourselves in Tihany.
