A Meander around Milano

Italy | Monday, January 2, 2023 | 13 photos

The new year started with miserable weather so we decided to explore another city instead of the countryside. Milano is only an hour away from Bergamo by train so we shuttled over there to check out the city of fashion. We arrived at Central Station which is anything but and it was a soggy walk into the old section of the city, Duomo. We strolled past the famous Scala Opera House, which turns out to be a very underwhelming building ( from the outside) , can't even compare to our Timisoara Opera House ! We followed the crowds through an incredible arcade to be spat out in Plaza Duomo which is dominated by the gigantic cathedral. Despite the weather the area was really crowded but we were glad to see the gothic monolith. The Christmas market was still up and running so we sampled some local delights and they were much better priced than the ridiculously expensive markets we visited in Budapest and Vienna. We soon had had enough of the crowds so left to explore another area of the city. We found ourselves outside Castello Sforzesco and we really enjoyed wandering around the courtyard and through the gardens at the back. Best of all, it was free, you just have to pay for the museums but they were closed anyway. After that we wandered to Brera, a nice area with cobbled streets and lots of restaurants. People were queuing up in the rain for certain fancy eateries so we sat in a hole in the wall gaff and had a delicious calzone and an original Peroni beer for a fraction of the cost. We realised we could catch a train back to Bergamo from the Garibaldi gate station which was much closer than central. We enjoyed our brief mooch around Milano but were hoping the weather improves in the next few days so we can see more of the lakes.
