Perquin

EL SALVADOR | Tuesday, 3 March 2009 | Views [724]

We caught a bus from Alegria to El Truinfo and a minivan from there to the highway and yet another bus from there to San Miguel, then we were just in time to catch the last bus to San Fransico Gotera. It was hot and busy there and altho we thought we might stay, in the end we jumped on a pickup and stood in the crowded back most of the way to Perquin.

The reason we wanted to come to Perquin is because this is the area where a lot of guerilla activity went on between the years of 1982-91. Kent went to visit the museum there and was guided through it by an ex-guerilla. Kent says it was just a museum with pictures on the walls and he has no desire to write about it and that is just to do it a huge disservice. Lots of people died here, lots of ordinary people put their lives on the line for what they believed in. Kent came back from there with tears in his eyes. We just have no idea in NZ of the effect or consequences of war, it is not part of our culture at all.

Sorry, I found the museum very depressing. Carol has been pressing me to write about it, but I´m not in the right frame of mind at the moment. Maybe later. I can only say that I was very impressed by the attitude and spirit of the people that we met in El Salvador, after all, it was only 18 years ago. I wish them all the best for their upcoming elections. May common sense prevail. I am thoroughly disgusted with the USA government for its past and present involvement in other countries affairs, and the american population for their lack of responsiblity, after all, they voted for the bastards.Sorry, I found the museum very depressing.
