    More Pisac market. Views[213] Pisac Sunday market. Full of color and indigenous people. Bit touristy, but we'll check out Chinchero next week which is smaller but more authentic.     Plaza de Armas, Huaraz. As promised, a picture of Plaza de Armas in every town we go to! Views[436] Local people in and around Huaraz. Ici, Quechua n'est pas que Décathlon! ;-) The Andean Quechua indigenous influence is everywhere here. Views[506] You really get a close-up look at 'farm-to-table' food in Peru! We'll spare you the photos of the butchering though - that's done in quite openly in all markets. They find a use for all the bits and pieces here, nothing goes to waste. Surprisingly we're still not vegetarians! :-) The chickens are across the street from our hostel, live ones arrive every morning ... you get the picture. Views[457] Local foliage.     Laguna Wilcacocha. Again. As seen in the previous Google photo, if you're lucky you can see the entire Cordillera Blanca! Second largest mountain range in the world after the Himalayas. Dozens of peaks at 6000m (18,000ft) and higher. Yep, even near the equator at that altitude they get snow! Views[261] Also Laguna Wilcacocha. Waiting for the clouds to part. They never did. :-( Views[240] Laguna Wilcacocha near Huaraz. 4,300m (12,900 ft), roughly 1,000m higher than Huaraz. Top photo is ours, bottom one is from Google. We picked the wrong season! Too many clouds his time of year :-( Views[413] Today, May 7th, we are in Huaraz (3052m-10013ft), still in the Cordillera Blanca. Today we're doing nothing. Seriously, we're out of the breath walking up the stairs. We really need to adapt to the altitude. We have headaches from the altitude, we're out of breath walking down the street, and our backs hurt from the mattress. Are we complaining? Yes! But no regrets and we'll be ready for Machu Picchu next Friday! Photo taken during lunch with a great view.     Very typical, Peruvians know how to maximize space in buses and taxis! I think the record so far is 5-6 people in one row. Here they squish 2 people somehow into the front passenger seat. Btw, the Andean Quechua people of the Cordillera Blanca wear big hats and colorful clothes. Views[280] Love the blue color! ;-) No photoshop, I swear! Hmm, thanks to my previous geological studies, I suspect the color is due copper sulfites. ;-) Views[329] Too bad the clouds were hiding the peaks of the mountains because we were supposed to see the Paramount mountain, the one you see when you watch a Paramount movie. Views[255] But it was worth the headache! So beautiful and impressive! We were the only ones there. Views[235] We hiked around the Laguna Paron (4155 m - 13632 ft). We took transportation from Caraz at 2000 m to la Laguna Paron at 4000 m. We weren't acclimatized, we shouldn't have done it. We had and still have headaches and feel so tired. :-( Views[279]
     
    Same as home! Evian water bottle! :-) Don't forget though that Cordillera Blanca is even higher than the Alps, elevation of the highest mountain here is 6768 m- 22205 ft. Views[265] We stayed in Caraz, a small town in the Cordillera Blanca. Elevation 2256 m - 7402 ft. It's the beginning of the altitude sickness, we didn't plan enough time to acclimatize. :-( that's why we are drinking coca leaves tea everyday and several times per day but it didn't seem to go away. Views[262] After the coast, we took the overnight bus to the famous Cordillera Blanca. Visit of the canyon del pato near Caraz. Views[273] Plaza de Armas in Trujillo Views[234] Chan Chan ruins.
