A Grand Time in Grand Turk 2019

TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS | Sunday, 26 May 2019 | Views [208]

I arrived in Grand Turk on a very sunny day. It was also the island's National Hero's Day for Jags McCartney. So the only military they had on the island which was mainly children, was out for the parade. Nearby I explored the local restaurant Sunshines. What I noticed first was the donkeys. They seemed to be roaming everywhere and anywhere. As I walked about I saw donkeys in the church, near houses and just walking along on the roads. Along with donkeys, there were also horses and ponies. One pony got a little too close to me by licking me. It was hot and sunny so I guess I was a salt lick. Actually it made my day.

On the way to Cockburn we saw a lot of buildings affected by the last hurricane. In fact the Williams sisters properties are left in ruins and there doesn't seem to be any sign of them fixing it up. It just looks derelict. Typical prime property bought by rich celebrities left to ruins. The rest of the buildings in and around Cockburn are over 100 years old. They're still standing but doesn't look like they are being used.

Then it was up north to the lighthouse. Made in the UK and brought to the island to try and stop the shipwrecks. Even with the lighthouse there were still shipwrecks but that was because the local people wanted their bounty by putting out the wick so ships would run aground near the island. Eventually it was replaced by electric and then the shipwrecks stopped for sure.

Again, more donkeys everywhere. This is a strange sight especially there are more of them than cats or dogs.

At the end of my day I found a really beautiful beach and relaxed. The water was warm and the sand was soft. A typical Caribbean island beach really.
