Shazza's Escapades Light hearted look at my travel escapades

Mykonos 2018

GREECE | Friday, 19 October 2018 | Views [221]

I think this will probably my last trip to a Greek island. Apart from Santorini, my favourite of the islands, all the other islands seem to be the same. I arrived end of October which is the end of the season so the island was closing up. Still some tourists around but not busy at all. This meant the sea was cold and it was super windy. Luckily the weather was hot most days. I was staying in an apartment up on the hill in Ornos. I was disappointed that my pool was out of action which meant I had to walk down the hill to the nearest beach and walk back up the big hill. Some days I did get a lift by the nearby construction workers who drove me up on their big truck.

I did walk to Mykonos a couple of times and back again. The one hour walk there and back was a lovely walk with beautiful coastal views but the hills were hard on my knees.

I loved the windmills although it has seen better days. I loved little venice. I also loved the buildings. I like the whitewashed houses and apartments dotted along the coast. It was quite striking.

The islands are full of cats as usual. The local beaches are ok but probably horrendous during the summer season. The main and most popular beach resort is Paradise but as the sea was cold I didn't bother visiting it and wasting 5 euros on the local buses. I did visit nearby Ornos town which had 2 beaches. One beach is for kite surfers as it was the windiest part of Ornos. The other was a smaller bay with shops and restaurants dotted along the beach. The view is awesome though.

Ano Mera is the second biggest town on the island but again it's the same old thing I have seen on the other islands. A small square with the usual church and cobbled streets.

Mykonos town was obviously where everyone goes to. It has some lovely areas like little Venice and the famous windmills but that's it. The old port and new port is a walkable distance so you can get the ferry all the way back to Athens and the other nearby islands. The old port just ferries passengers to Delos etc.

This trip was mainly a relaxed one. I didn't explore the island as extensively as I normally do but didn't feel like I missed out at all.
