She was in Syria, falling in love with a whole people and their country. Rich red soil, a universal and genuine welcome, history, more history, good food, things to see, shopping - oh, the shopping! - and a committed smoking culture - what's not to like?

Now it is time for somewhere a bit cooler and English-speaking. So I am going to Genoa, Italy, by ferry and trains and will embark on a freighter and sail to Halifax, Nova Scotia. It takes ten days. This is not a cruise so - no parties, no fancy dress, no games, nothing. What bliss. Taking a Farsi language course as my dream is to get back to Iran. Not looking likely, is it?
After this trip, a couple of months at home with feet up and then - Iraq! with Hinterland Travel. My first group organised tour but who would go to Iraq independently? Not me.
Wish me luck mid-Atlantic, yeah?
