Mon 22 Sept : Chesterfield to Caen

I left Chesterfield 12.40 for London to collect my last visa, the Russian, from James at 5pm. Slight detour to Poland Street to have filling replaced from last night. What timing these teeth have. Then to buy Interrail Global pass for 10 in 22 days European travel. In retrospect, probably a mistake. It may be cheaper to buy point to point. Arrived Whitfield Street and lo! James has done what he promised, I have Russian visa and can go. Portsmouth is the only night crossing for foot passengers - Dover stops feet at 7pm. 11.45pm ferry to Caen - lucky to meet Diane and gary who, as we left Portsmouth told me what I was seeing.Love the Spinnaker with its cobalt and red lights.I think I shall always leave at night - it is so romantic. A quick chorus of 'The leaving of Portsmouth' and off to rest. rest? Hah! What a miserable night. I have now learnt that where possible, buy a bed not a reclining seat. Sleep sitting up, no. Lying on the floor, hmm, hurts this side, change position, hmm, hurts that side too, let's try on the back, ahh, not bad, drifting off....that's when the snoring began. Like being married again. Pecos' tip of the day...Rent a bed.
