Disappointed to find that Vienna is not in black and white, devoid of sinister men lurking in doorways and the pharmacies well stocked with penicillin. The power of Hollywood! On the upside the West End Hostel is terrific at 22 euros, the city is walkable and in parts very beautiful, the people are friendly and tolerant of tourists. On the downside again, Vienna is incredibly expensive, especially for a caffeine addict like me. 3.50 for coffee is too much even in Vienna, home of coffee and cake. Yesterday I took the Stift Melk, Donau, Krems trip 45 euros and worth every pfennig. Melk monastery is a baroque riot - a World heritage site as is the stretch of the Wachau (Danube/Donau river valley). Expensive and so glad I did it. Lots of Japanese tourists on the ship and elderly Austrians and me. Have spent 3 nights here as last year did the mad dash to India and regretted it. Tonight is the sleeper to Sofia.
