Our flight left Heathrow on Christmas Eve at about the same time Santa started out from the North Pole. Rather than take the non-stop British Air flight from London to Accra, we saved $400 by flying Royal Air Moroc and spending the night in an airport hotel in Casablanca. Our luggage was checked through to Ghana so all we had with us was our carry-on. So far so good. But when we arrived in Accra on Christmas Day our luggage was MIA. It was like finding coal in our Christmas stocking!
Fiesta Residence Hotel in Accra costs a bit more than we usually spend on lodging but today it turned out to be worth it. Not only did the staff help us track our missing bags, Wisdom drove us to the airport, waited for us to claim the luggage and even stopped at the supermarket so we could replenish our supplies.
It was 32°F London when we left London and it was 32°C today when James, our guide and Richard, the driver picked us up to start our birding tour. We have repacked our winter jackets and down vests and are wearing shorts and sandals for the first time since we left Pompeii. Yes, we know it’s temporary but it feels s-o-o-o good!
