We fondly remember the two days we spent in Dubrovnik in 2011, so much so that we decided not to revisit on this trip. With the commercialization of the city as the site of “Game of Thrones” (which we have never watched!) and the €40 fee just to walk upon the walls around the city, it just wouldn’t be the same.
When strong winds forced the Captain to cancel our stops in Split, Croatia and Kotor, Montenegro, we set sail for the Greek island of Corfu. As consolation prizes go, Corfu is a good choice. It was in December when we last visited Corfu and we had the entire town pretty much to ourselves. When we arrive this morning there were already three cruise ships in port. Quelle difference!
The town-supplied shuttle dropped us in front of Hotel Konstantinoupolis, where we had stayed in 2014, and Trish took over from there, trooping through the winding alleyways and along the waterfront towards the Old Fortress. Somehow the town managed to absorb the multitudes but we soon tired of the pushing and jostling and settled down at a bistro.
Today was one of our anniversaries—thirty-two years ago Connie and I met, courtesy of a personal ad in “Westword” and we decided to celebrate with a bottle of Prosecco. We also toasted Gary, Tricia's late husband and our hero, Dr. Jane Goodall, who died yesterday. Prosecco is a very versatile libation.
A beautiful rainbow appeared as we sailed from Corfu. This one’s for you, Jane!
