PIRAEUS IS THE BUSIEST PORT I have ever seen. And I guess it has been so for a few thousand years when Phoenician triremes vied with Roman galleys and Venetian traders for docking space. Today it’s container ships, tugs, passenger and RORO ferries, tankers, freighters and cruise ships like ours all zipping around like ants at a picnic. The harbor was so busy this morning that Virtuosa had to wait an hour to park.
Busy Piraeus
We debated making the trip into Athens. We spent a week there in 2012 and frankly it wasn’t our favorite city. The Parthenon is still surrounded by construction cranes and British Museum hasn’t returned the Elgin Marbles—nor are they likely to do so any time soon—and we can actually see the Acropolis from the ship. When a second cruise ship arrived we decided that the historic area would be overrun so we settled for a walk around Piraeus instead. And, yes, we stocked up on Diet Coke.
