THE ORIGINAL PLAN ON OUR WAY SOUTH called for a stop in the Blue Ridge Mountains. but after Hurricane Helene washed out much of Asheville NC, we went to Plan B, a cozy AirBnB cottage in Kill Devil Hills.

A big upgrade from a tent
Twenty years ago when we were last in Cape Hatteras National Seashore, we were camping—in a tent, no less—back before Kitty Hawk and Nags Head looked like the Jersey Shore and became known as “OBX.” Farther out on Cape Hatteras towns like Rodanthe, Avon and Buxton, are much the same as we remember them.

The drive from OBX to Myrtle Beach took us onto some North Carolina backroads. It was like driving through a verse from Dixie Land, the one that goes “I wish I was in the land of cotton.” It’s good that we stopped to take a photo—it was the highlight of the six-hour drive.
