PURA VIDA” LITERALLY TRANSLATES AS the “pure life” or “simple life,” Pura Vida means hello, good-bye and everything is cool—the Tico equivalent of Hawaii’s hang-loose Shaka sign. Pura Vida is an attitude and a way of life—and we’re livin’ it.

Pura Vida—It's A State of Mind

Well, we’re trying damned hard to live it. Our flight from Houston to Liberia actually landed early. As we inched our way towards immigration we realized that they decided two officials would be enough since the flight was only half-full. Pura Vida. We spent the night at Hilton’s Garden Inn and in the morning the shuttle driver dropped us right at the Avis lot rather than the airport counter which was a promising start to the day. Then we learned that Costa Rica and Avis require that you purchase their insurance, despite what rental coverage you might have—$1000 for the month! No problem, Pura Vida.

Empanadas and Ceviche to die for

We had already downloaded the Costa Rica maps onto Gaby, our trusty Garmin GPS, and we programed in the route to Playa Flamingo. It took over an hour to drive 45 kilometers, but since we couldn’t get our condo until 3PM, Pura Vida. We had a wonderful lunch at a restaurant across Potero Bay from Playa Flamingo. Connie's empanadas and my ceviche were truly Pura Vida!

AirBnB has come through again—our digs at Sunset Heights are palatial. The two-bedroom, two-bath condo sits on a ridge with views of both Potero Bay and the Pacific. And while you can walk to the beach, the climb back up the hill makes driving an attractive option. The AC is fantastic, wifi works great, the kitchen has pretty much everything we need and bathrooms are enormous. We found a decent grocery store a few klicks away, stocked up on the essentials and now have enough meals for a few days of Pura Vida.
