Ed in Oz Travels around the stations & pubs of Australia

We've all arrived in Mt Isa!!!

UNITED KINGDOM | Friday, 7 March 2008 | Views [800] | Comments [4]

Well we left Rocky on Wed morning after a pretty heavy night on Tuesday and we drove through to Longreach - a small town known as the 'Gateway to the Outback'.  It is the home of the 'Stockmans Hall of Fame' which is a very interesting museum dedicated to Australian Outback Life.  We left Longreach this morning and drove through a hell of a lot of nothing and the green gradually turned into brown.  We arrived in Cloncurry for lunch and from there we headed north towards Quamby and Jessievale (The Station where Ed has been working) - we stopped for a stubbie at the famous Quamby Hotel before hitting the road again.  We stopped briefly at a disused Uranium Mine which was about a half hour walk in the searing heat - but it was well worth it and pretty spectacular to see.  We have now arrived in Mt Isa which is a small town dominated by a massive mine.  A quiet night in tonight!!!  Before we head onto Tennant Creek tomorrow.  From there we will head South to Alice Springs and Ayers Rock.  Well that's about all for now but we'll be in touch again soon.  Love to you all - Ed, Andy & Mel -x-x-x-

Hey Jude, Andy & Mel
Where the Hell is Quamby!
Real glad to hear from you and that your travel plans sound to be working out OK. As you say - a heck of alot of nothing and it is really hard to imagine just how empty parts of Oz are. It would be good to meet everyone at Jessievale - did you get roped in to help with the mustering? I bet Mount Isa is quite a sight with such a huge mine virtually in the town centre.
Will be interested to hear about Tennant Creek and the Devils Marbles, and I guess Jude & Mel will be in new territory.
We had a good day in Ilkley on Wednesday. Phil has been doing abit more work on the trailer lights today. We are just awaiting the arrival of John and Wendy who are joining us for a natter and supper.
The forecast for Monday sounds as if it will be rather wild so we must batten down the hatches. Has the flooding subsided are Jessievale?
Pam rang us on Thursday to exchange news on the Antipodean travellers! I rang Mary last night and she seems to be OK and was really keen to hear about you. She says that you have to behave yourselves ( for 10 mins at least)
Continue to enjoy yourselves and take good care of each other. LOL Mum & Dad xxx

Hey Jude Andy & Mel
Just got the photographs and have put a message on there so I am not sure where that will show up.
Really good to have some pictures and you all look well. Hope the driving is going OK. We reckon about an hour in that type of terrain is just about enough so you all get some resting time and looking out for Roos time. Keep going safely and enjoy yourselves.
Lots of love Mum & Dad xxx

Hey you lot
As usual I am doing things the wrong way round. Have just read your email Andy and we thank you for that update too.
You liken Mount Isa to Barnsley! Now don't be knocking Barnsley as they played Chelsea in the FA Cup yesterday, a very good game, Barnsley played really well and beat Chelsea 1 - 0. So they are through to the Semis now. Manchester United played Portsmouth and Portsmouth won that too 1 - 0. So there you are!
We watched a couple of the Rugby matches which were not particularly good. England lost to Scotland but cannot remember the other scores! Typical woman!
Hope you enjoy the Rugby down under! Oh and England have just lost a cricket match in New Zealand.
Here endeth the sports up date and its over to you in Alice Springs. LOL Mum & Dad xx

Hi boys,
I see all is going well, thanks for the phone call at 2am, must remember to re-pay the favour one day. Amanda says she is going to f-ing kill you.

Thanks for the pic's. I'm very green with envy and wish I was out there, but I think my liver will be in better shape than yours by the end of the trip.

Hope Andy's eating well, he looked a little slim on the pic's.

Skelly.
