Nanjing

CHINA | Friday, 12 September 2008 | Views [773]

Nanjing is about 2 hours away from Shanghai by fast train.  This is one of the old capitals of the country.  The capital of China changed a few times in history depending on which dynasty and where that Emperor ruled from.  Bejing is the current capital and has been since the Cultural Revolution.

We went to Nanjing mainly because this was the place that our professor Dr Wang studied in.  Then we had also read a book recently called 'Chinese Lessons' which featured a westerner livign in Nanjing.  So the city was awesome to walk thru and you could see the places in the book and smile remembering the characters in the novel.

It was also interesting to imagine Dr Wang as a young student here.

We spent our anniversary in a funny resturant called "Lion King Dainty Community" - the name makes no sense but it was funny as it was exactly how it was described in the book.

We also went to a place called "Little Sheep"  which had a big steaming bowl where you cook the food in yourself.  The food was fantastic as the bowl had 2 halves - one spicy and one with just full of  great flavour like ginger and garlic.

Hunan Road was a fun shopping street with it all lit up like the Vegas strip for a  few hours every night.  This is also where all the best resturants are.

Then there is the usual parks, gardens and temples which add to the touristy things you can do.

We stayed in a hostel called "I Am Hostel" for 100 RMB a night for us both.  Which had private bathroom, tv.

Ciao for now!
