After the walk we got back to the car to see hundreds of flies on the car. We didn't think much of it (as you assume they will disappear when you drive). So we headed further south to see how far we could make to towards Hanmer Springs. We stopped/parked at a tiny tiny villiage on the side of the road of the national park - here we promptly fell asleep.
We were less than an hour out of Hamner Springs. As we drove in the daylight we noticed that the flies were all still on the car! After driving for over an hour at 100KMS sometimes they buggers were still able to cling on to the car. We watched disgusted and facinated as they clung to the windows and NOT falling. Briel and I when we stopped tried to remove them without success. We spent the next 2 days removing them by force one by one picking and killing them off - it was a near obsession.
In any case we arrived to Hamner Spings hot pools. We took the multiple entry so we lazed in the pools all morning. Went out to cook up some lunch then headed back in again for a few more hours of delcious soaking.
These pools were pretty cheap entrance single entry being $12. Double entry $15. You can even get some slight discounts if you pick up the vouchers from the NZ guide books which you can pick up nearly anywhere.
There was a hot pool of 41, 40, 39, 36 degrees. We would change between them as often we felt like were were being fried since it was a great sunny day which added to the heat in our bodies. We spent a lot longer here than we had planned, but it was well worth it!
We even scored a shower as they had change room facilites! WHoo hoo!
We then stopped the night in Reefton township. Had toasted sandwiches and a couple of DVDs to fall into a dead happy sleep.
Ciao for now.
