AFTER ANOTHER NIGHT WITH JACOB IN PATMOS we took the five-hour ferry ride to Rhodes. We are splurging at the Best Western in the New City, four stars but still only $50 a night with a great breakfast spread. The location is perfect. There is a supermarket across the street, MacDonalds is down the block and we are only a ten-minute walk from the historic Old City of Rhodes. Best of all, we found an Apple dealer who was able to replace the power cord for our Mac, which had shorted out. It is almost frightening how dependent we are on the computer.
Snowy peaks of Turkey
We had tried to visit Rhodes from Turkey, so near that we can see the snow covered mountains from the harbor, back in ’06 but were foiled by bad weather and limited winter ferry service. Rhodes is best known as the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was destroyed by an earthquake a dozen years after it was built and no one quite agrees on its location. But we are here now and that is all that matters.
The Colossus might have straddled the harbor
