If you really want to experience Africa just take a journey by bus – Lusaka to Livingstone, for example. Just spending some time at the terminal is an eye-opener. While we waited onboard and watched the driver spread glue on the spider web cracks on the windscreen, all manner of peddlers boarded selling anything you could imagine. Cell phones, SIM cards and watches. Socks, shoes and sandals. Handbags. neckties and wigs. A complete set of barber tools. Food of all kinds plus water and soft drinks.
We bought our tickets yesterday but even so, there were two others with the same seat numbers. We got there first and prevailed. But our window didn’t open and Connie’s seat was broken. There was no air-conditioning and we used our i-pod to block the African gospel the driver insisted on playing. The 7-hour journey ended up taking 9 ½ hours, a real bargain for twenty bucks.
