We were taking the Rick Steves walking tour of Granada when Connie noticed "himself" standing on the cathedral steps. Rick Steves had been an afternoon “guest” in our living room on Sunday afternoons for more than a decade and we considered him a friend, in the virtual sense at least. His travel exploits let us revisit places we had been and inspired us to see new ones. Rick is a sometimes tour guide, travel book author and host of Travels in Europe on public television in the US. We had seen on his website that he was working in Europe but we hardly expected to run into him. It obviously takes more than a plane ticket, a script and a camera to produce a travel show. Like Harold Hill in The Music Man, ya gotta know the territory!
Rick and Margarita comparing notes in the Cathedral
We approached as he was returning the sprig of rosemary to the Roma (gypsy) woman and smiling boyishly as he explained that, no, he didn’t need his fortune read. He said he had just returned from researching sites in Israel and Palestine. Now he and Granada lguide Margarita were getting the skinny on the cathedral art. We told him a bit about our travels and I’m not sure which impressed him more; that we were into our third year on the road or we had found good lodging in Granada for €35 a night.
