I EXPECTED MISSION BEACH TO BE HOPPING on this Australia Day weekend, something like Seaside Heights, NJ on the July 4th. The town isn’t just quiet, it’s dead. And we like it! You see, we are mostly passing time until our cruise to New Zealand and the Mission Reef Resort is the perfect place. This may be the nicest of the wonderful places we’ve stayed in Queensland, a real vacation condo.
We came down from the Tablelands Sunday, stopping at Woolies in Innisfail for groceries. There is a Woolworths in Mission Beach but it will be closed until Tuesday for the Australia Day holiday. Glad we checked on-line. We are at that stage where we are trying to match both our supplies and money to our remaining time. The money is a bit easier since we will have a night in Sydney and a stop in Hobart on the cruise. When it comes to food, we would rather not have leftovers and definitely don’t want to go hungry.
Very Funny
We walked along a trail dotted with signs reading ‘Cassowary Crossing’ this morning. A group of cyclists passing asked if we had seen the cassowary 100 meters back. We retraced our steps for a looksee, but no bird. A woman on a bike coming the other way said there was a cassowary 100 meters ahead so we picked up our pace but, again, no bird. Either our timing was off this morning or we were the brunt of a joke Aussies play on visitors. If so, we can laugh at ourselves. HA, HA, HA!
But you can bet we won't get bit by the same dog twice.
