DUBBO IS THE KIND OF PLACE WHERE YOU WISH YOU had grown up, a throw-back to a simpler time. It has everything you could want, including plenty of free street parking. There is even a Flight Centre travel agency where Ami, a real person, seemed happy to sell us airline tickets to Brisbane.
Ami, at Flight Centre, a real live person just like the old days
Dubbo is ranch land, dry and flat and windy. The sky was darkened not by smoke but by dust. Sheep rule, at least at the Shearing Shed Motor Inn where we stayed. Not exactly a sheep ranch cum motel, it’s more of a motel masquerading as a sheep station. Trevor anD Ann have put in a lot of effort to the Shed—and it shows. The rooms are large, the beds comfortable and the bathrooms newly decorated. It doesn’t hurt, either, that there is a Subway and Macca’s across the street.
Shearing Shed Motor Inn—They'll Leave the Light On
If you ever find yourself in Dubbo—don’t laugh, it’s the last bit of civilization on the long road to Broken Hill—spend the night. They will leave the light on for you.
