The r is rolled so the place is pronounced more like Orrid - but orrid it isn't, it's lovely, although quite touristy. Amazingly there is a tourist info at the bus station, although the girl is pretty useless and not pretty and she's wearing sunglasses indoors (it's not sunny and this is Macedonia not Italy). With her 'help' i get a private room in the centre of town for 7 euros a night - this is more like it, although i have a long way to go to save the money i just blew in Skopje. It's a very basis room, it's not that clean, but it does have hot water, an electric heater and even a TV (that works). So much for heading south, this place is freezing.
I have two nights here, most of the first day is gone, but i manage to have a good wander around. The next day i have a really good wander around i.e. i get lost. i even have an A-Z map, alas most streets don't have names and lets me honest - would that really have stopped me getting lost. Ohrid is on a very big lake and has some great views as such. There are cobbled windy (as in snaking) streets, the remains of a fortress, many many churches, the ruins of an amphitheatre...it really is a picturesque place. the prices are much better than Skopje too.
It's a pleasant couple of days - getting away from it all as i live such a demanding life. ;)
