. . . YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM. Nowhere is this more true than Lebanon. As turbulent as the ancient history of the region was — Phoenician, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, et. al. — it doesn’t compare with the complexities of the 20th Century.
The solution remains elusive but the problem is one of British and French meddling beginning before the First World War. It is a problem of religion; Christian, Muslim and Judaism. Of Sunni and Shi’ite. It is a problem of refugees from Palestine, Syria and Iraq. It is a problem of aggression and intolerance, of the PLO, Fatah, Hamas and Hezbollah’s dedication to the destruction of Israel. Despite the presence of the UNHCR and UN peacekeeping forces, the future doesn’t appear bright. As is true elsewhere in the world, the real victims are the innocent.
