WE VISITED EIGHT GREEK ISLANDS IN SIX WEEKS from Corfu in the Adriatic to Rhodes on the Turkish coast and each had its own special charm.

But Crete has it all.  It’s large enough to warrant renting a car.  From beach to snow-capped mountains, Crete is a wonderful palette for photos with wildflowers in bloom everywhere.  Crete was the cradle of European civilization and it’s the best place to learn about the Minoans.  The museum in Herakleon is secoond only to the one in Athens.  And it didn’t hurt that the weather was superb.
