Rethymno's Venetian Past

THE VENETIANS REALLY GOT AROUND.  Take Rethymno, for example, dominated by the 16th Century Venetian Fortesta.  Just a stone’s throw away is the Venetian Harbor and the 13th Century lighthouse.  Even the Sohora Boutique Hotel, our latest home-away-from-home, sports an enclosed balcony dating from Venetian days.

There is a distinct Turkish influence, too.  The Ottoman Sultan Ibrihim Mosque squats in the center of the Fortesta while the minaret of the Nerantzes Mosque rises in perpetual renovation over the old town.
