Typhoon "Fong Vong" (NOAA photo from space)

JAPAN IS A MAGNET FOR NATURAL DISASTERS.  Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis and typhoons — Japan has them all.  So when we learned that “Super-typhoon” Vong Fong, the second such storm in two weeks, was headed our way, we took it seriously.  And Hiroshima seemed like as good a place as any to wait it out.  Mitsui Garden Hotel is centrally located, solidly built and our room on the twentieth floor is well above flood level.

Vong Fong is long gone — never got here.  It battered Okinawa but all we had was a few hours of steady rain, perfect weather for a visit to the Hiroshima Museum.  Better safe than sorry.
