NONE OF THE IRELAND GUIDEBOOKS BOTHERED to mention Adare, not even Rick Steves. As far as they are concerned this charming village in County Limerick hardly exists. Which is a shame.
Just too charming
We noticed the cute thatch-roof cottages as we drove through last week and made a note to return even if we had to backtrack. It was just that charming. We booked a room at the Adare Country House, a quiet B&B within walking distance of town. The rooms are large and comfortable and the breakfast was scrumptious - scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for me and french toast with real maple syrup for Connie. Yummy! I can't understand why anyone would stay anyplace else!
Norman Castle from the Medieval bridge
In addition to the cottages, Adare boasts three medieval abbeys, Augustinian, Franciscan and Trinitarian, a new denomination for us. There is an earl's manor house, now an upscale hotel and a Norman castle, in ruins of course. Even Andrew thought it was a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
