Tues 7 Oct - Istanbul

Last real day here. Stayed up late reading new book Jason Goodwin's Lords of the Horizon, the history of the Ottoman Empire. I am up to 1329. It is, like his Yashmin the Eunuch novels, terrific. The guy can write.

Good sleep tho missed Jon. Woke up cheerful and ready for bfast - wonder what it can be? It is cheese, eggs, olives, bread, jam! What a lovely surprise :))

Nasty shock later. I thought the sharp hill up to Agia Sophia was going to give me a heart attack but ees nothin' compared to trying to get 500 euros out of atm an being tole you have 'insufficient funds'. Hightailed to internet cafe and, after some difficulty remembering yet another password, logged on to NW. There are funds. Phew! For a moment there thought I had to go home. Would fling myself into the Bosphorous (sans sack) first. Wonder if anyone has ever got a refund for an unused Iranaian visa? That was a joke.

Tried ghastly long black coat on. Ena Sharples, OK?
