Well we are now at the famous Margaret River and surrounding Districts, and have a great camp set up in the Leeuwin- Naturaliste National Park. Despite the fact it has rained pretty steadily for our entire time here we have managed to fit in seeing some of the impressive assets of the region.
This area is home to over 100 caves in the spine of the Leeuin Naturaliste Ridge. A small number are available for public viewing and we visited the lake cave and the jewel cave. At the Lake cave you descend 390 stairs down into a giant doline passing giant limestone cliffs, ancient Karri Trees and enormous weathered stalactities . (the 390 stairs were less enjoyable on the climb back up again)!!
At the bottom we entered a cave that had been carefully lit to highlight the crystalline beauty of the cave decorations reflected in the water.
Jewel cave is WA’s largest cave on show. IT has quite gigantic caverns & wonderful formations not to mention a thyosene fossel. We have included some photo’s in the gallery although they don’t do justice to how spectacular the formations were.
Of course you can’t come to the Margaret River Area without visiting some of the wineries. In some down time I managed to corner a local tour guide to nut out our ‘own’ tour of some of the smaller family run boutique wineries. Steve & I spent a very happy day sampling (& purchasing) some wonderful squashed grape offerings. Ethan was very patient and was content to read, and to be regularly provided with yummy food.
We are now stocked up for the next few weeks!!!
