Wednesday 7th April – leaving Kaputar

AUSTRALIA | Friday, 9 April 2010 | Views [479]

It was a rainy, gusty and wet pack up at Kaputar before hitting the road at around 10.30am.  We headed off through Narrobri stopping at Walget for lunch (and a quick visit to the local IGA).  Not sure I’d like to live in Walget.  The houses and businesses were either derelict OR completely caged in with thick steel bars.  Local indigenous kids threw rubbish and cans at the car as we drove down the street – entertainment starved!

The drive from there to Brewarrina was spectacular for the bird watchers amongst us.  (Able to mark off quite a few from the bird field guide Mary and Barry).

Brewarrina reminded me of Dirranbandi-  Dan and Mandy – it was a town where the only visable occupants seemed to be dogs and kids and the odd old bloke outside the pub. At the information centre a lovely woman gave us the keys to the caravan / camp ground in town.  It was a sort of “do-it-yourself” affair.  But for $20 a night there was a powered site for recharging batteries / fridge / phone etc and HOT SHOWERS!!

We were serenaded by the local dog choir until about 3 or 4 am, who were spurred on to greater hights of howling crecendo’s by a chorus of very colourful language by the locals.

On the bright side however, the place was teeming with frogs (& mossies) and we saw loads of them – green frogs, brown frogs (sorry should try to find out what sort they were) – but they were very healthy looking and everywhere.
