San Sebastian day

SPAIN | Sunday, 20 January 2008 | Views [563]

San Sebastian day is celebrated on 20th January and is a very strange affair. The people of the town dress up and play the drums for a full 24 hours, starting at midnight, and finishing the next day. The people dress up as soldiers and chefs, and they play the same few tunes and march around the streets. It originates from the French occupation, and when it became obvious that the French had lost their military power all the people started mocking the soldiers and following them round banging pots and pans. Now its a chance for people to be proud of their town and of their history.
