Caregivers, Nursing Assistants, Immigrants...

USA | Sunday, 7 January 2018 | Views [561]

For several years, after I had traveled and taught English in Mexico, India, and Thailand, I taught healthcare English to immigrants and refugees in a classroom setting.  I developed curriculum, teaching materials and activities that could not only help with their own health care needs, but also so that they could work as either direct caregivers or enroll in a Certified Nursing Assistant course.

I used several textbooks and developed test materials and activities to help make learning fun!  Teaching was also fun for me.  I met many wonderful men & women from different countries and languages.  Most everyone was interested in becoming caregivers (or were already caregivers or health care professionals in their own country) or interested in also taking the professional course and then taking the state board exams.

We had fun learning together, practicing health care skills (taking blood pressures, making beds, or helping someone walk with a walker, etc.), and becoming familiar with English medical terminology.  Our classes would always end in a celebratory party - sharing food from many different countries/cultures.  I will be posting my class notes, quizzes, tests, and activiites for anyone interested.  :)
