Taranaki or Egmont National Park

NEW ZEALAND | Sunday, 16 March 2008 | Views [516]

I had a lovely trip to Egmont national Park with 4 nights in a hut and 4 5 days of walking. The track goes around Mt. Taranaki with isolated waterfalls, rainforests, large river gorges, and mountaintop huts. My first night I met three elderly kiwis and a german (the germans are everywhere). It was a short and easy walk to my first hut. I took many pictures of the trail work because in some areas it makes my mouth drop open. In one section there were thousands of fancy steps and even a secret person-counter underneath one of the steps. I was the 10,121st person to step there. The highlight of my trip was staying on top of fanthams's peak, the neighbor to Mt. Taranaki. It was an all-day climb to the top of the mountain where there is a small but cozy hut cabled to the mountaintop. Incredible views and the nicest sunset I've seen yet in New Zealand. I met another german and a kiwi in the hut and we played cars and talked into the night. The next morning I summited Taranaki. Apparently, stepping on the very top of the mountain is like stepping on your grandfather's head according to the maori but I was evil and went to the very top. I will add pictures soon!
