customs and 2008

This will be quick. But I wanted to let everyone know that I arrived safe and sound in NZ. I had been a bit nervous about going through customs because NZ is pretty strict about having a certain amount of money in your bank account and having a return ticket. But the customs official was the nicest I've ever encountered, except for maybe the one in Paris. He never even asked me about my bank account or my return ticket. Just gave me my one-year visa and wished me a nice stay. And the Kiwis give you free tea and coffee on arrival. I made it smoothly and before dark to my hostel and made some friends right away: students from the English school nearby, from Japan, Germany, Brazil, and Holland. We watched the not-so-impressive fireworks at 12 to bring in the FIRST new year in the world. So happy 2008!
