Where ARE We? Kent & Anna retire and travel the world

Southland Museum

NEW ZEALAND | Friday, 22 November 2013 | Views [211]

We were in Invercargill for the day and decided to visit the Southland Museum as it had an extensive Roman exhibit. Wow, we could have spent the whole day there. This was one of those unexpected jewels – the museum wasn't even on our radar as we made our way down the South Island. They had numerous hands-on exhibits to demonstrate Roman engineering and warfighting innovations. We were particularly fascinated with the water clock, arches, odometer, and groma (their surveying instrument). And we couldn't pass up the Colosseum, especially the elevators the Romans built to carry gladiators and animals up to the arena. We had to tear ourselves away as it was lunchtime ... and a group of students was coming through. What a great time!
