Besides the damage from the earthquake, there is quite a fight going on between the Anglican Church and the government. The Anglican Church wants to raze the cathedral and build a new one. The government wants to have the "original" church repaired. It's a gross oversimplification, but they've already been in court for several years, with no end in sight. It's tough for Americans to understand, because of our strict adherence to separation of church and state.
