Evening all! Just finishing up day 5 in Prague! We've had a super relaxing time here, enjoying the sun, lots of walking, eating (for something different), a little freshening up of the packs -I'm sure you're all sick of seeing us in the same coats, but guess what..we hate them more!! We tried to give some of our winter clothes and shoes we don't need anymore to a second hand store.. the lady spoke no English, looked at us as if we were handing her a bomb and would not have a bar of it.. so we ran away pretty quickly and packed the unwanted items back into our backpacks.
We spent our first couple of days just walking the streets of Prague.. we walked to the Charles bridge.. got a photo.. walked into the Old Town Square.. then we looked at our map, and wondered why the hell the clock tower wasn't in the square where it said it was.. probably because our photo in front of the Charles Bridge, wasn't the Charles bridge..and the Old Town Square we were in, was not the Old Town Square at all. Epic map fail.. but once we found the gigantic Charles Bridge and the huge Clock tower in the Big old town square. . We knew where we were for the next 4 days! Hooray, and tom recons he passed his outdoor ed course.. pfft.
Not sure where to start with this city and details, so excuse my messy blog entry.. the city is very beautiful with a lot of old buildings.. not old buildings like there are in every other country we have been to so far though.. these are like... really old, cool, big buildings. .and nothing is modern except for a few buildings here and there. Prague was mostly untouched during the wars, so all of the town was well maintained (that's what I read somewhere anyway. .so I believe it). Lots of cobbled stone roads, which we are starting to find less amusing, the more you have to walk on them.. especially in flip flops (I'm working on not saying thongs in Europe). Plenty of gardens and parks to relax in, which we did as we have had beautiful weather here everyday..and by beautiful, we mean max 20 degrees.. it's like heaven coming down and kissing our skin.. I've never felt such warmth before haha..that's how it feels after 2 months of freaking cold!!!
The castle, which is the biggest ancient castle in the whole world .. is not really a cool castle.. it's kind of like lots of buildings all put together to make it the biggest castle but it doesn't really look overly castle-y. In fact I thought the castle was another castle to the left of the actual castle. Again, map skills are not as great as I think. Anyway, we walked up to this large castle.. and the view was pretty so it made the not so impressive castle, kind of impressive. We also learnt the Czech president lives there. And apparently he's a pretty cool dude who falls asleep in Parliament because he thinks that everyone else there talks shit and there is nothing else better to do! Ha!
There is pig cooking everywhere in Prague! And it is sooo good! There are also lots of sausages in bread..Their sausages are not like our sausages though..they are much fancier. There are pretty twirly donuts which are kind of bland but delicious at the same time (possible tourist trap)..and everything is so cheap! It's so nice to finally be somewhere that doesn't over charge, beer is about $3 for half a litre..and cocktails are $7.. it's amazing!
We also did a day trip to Kutna Hora, a small town about 1 hr out of prague. We visited the bone chapel and the Saint Barbara cathedral, which, I'm not really one to admire cathedrals, but this is my favourite so far. It was very basic, but beautiful and though it was started in the 13th century, they didn't finish it until 1905! I think I liked it because the town was nice and peaceful, and then there was just this huge cathedral. Kutna Hora itself had nothing else overly special to offer, but it was refreshing to get out of the city life, enjoy a tasty meal, see some bones and... drink cheap beer!
Not a lot else to talk about here.. hostel is nice though, we even got our 5 bed room to ourself for 2 nights which was the most space we have ever had in what feels like forever. Beautiful sunsets in prague as well.. people line up along the river taking photos so I think it must be a 'thing'. Tomorrow we are back to Germany to Ulm for 6 nights which we're looking forward to!
