    I'm not sure how well known it is, as I had never heard about it, but in 1755 ! Lisbon had a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, followed quickly by a 20ft tsunami. It was on the holiday of All saints Day, aka the day afte Halloween. This natural disaster wiped out half the population of Lisbon (100,000) and left this church roofless. most of the city had to be rebuilt..
