Yesterday I went on an all day tour. The first was to a place called The Eagle's Nest, which was built as Hitler's retreat in world war II, located near Berchtesgade, Germany. This is a place high in the mountains, where he would meet with his top people. While the building is preserved, with the same brass elevator, and a large elegant room with a huge fireplace-it is now a restaurant with outstanding views. To me that is the best revenge. A room which was used to decide on genocide is a place where ANYONE (with money) can eat and get a great view.
Then I want to the salt mines, where I put on a weird looking suit, and took a small train to a salt mine. I saw exhibits on how salt was extracted, and even a large salt pool which was cool.
Between the bunker and salt mine, I ate lunch with some people I met, a US couple living in Germany and another off a river cruise-I even tried sausage, so I could say I had sausage in Germany (I didn't order it-I ordered pasta and I tasted one of the other guy's sausage-that doesn't sound right, does it?). Anyway, I have had vegetarian sausage from Trader Joe's, and it tasted about the same to me. This was in the quaint town of Berchtesgaden.
After the salt tour, the bus stopped at a lakeside tour where I had some ice cream (It was very hot out) It was very hot out, so the ice cream was refreshing.
After the tour returned to Salzburg, I wanted to go on the bus back to the hostel. I got on the wrong bus-but it went near a large castle called the Fortress Hohensalzburg, which was cool and offered great views. After a dinner of veggie curry from a fast-food type place, I went back to the hostel where I had a few drinks with the guy I was was speaking with last night from Calgary. He offered me some Johnny Walker, which I accepted, and I was soon ready to go to sleep.
