Well, we got up super early to be at the port in tme to catch the ferry to Uruguay. But, miscommunication resulted in us getting dropped off at the wrong port. Big oops on somebody´s part. So, we missed our boat, had to catch the next one, and thus missed our class this evening. Apparently the guy who was supposed to teach it is a really big deal in this country. And I don´t think there will be a chance to make it up. So goes life...
Anyhoo, we did finally make it to Uruguay. Uruguay means something about colorful birds - river of the colorful birds, maybe. The official name is Republica Oriental de Uruguay, because it is easst of the Uruguya River. Also, when they fill out official forms they are technically oriental. News to me! Not what I would have thought.
We toured the old town of Colonia. This is a must visit if you ever get to this country!! It was old and cute and quaint and charming. We ate at a colorful little restaurant, climbed up their lighthouse for a full view, and browsed the tiny handycraft shops. The streets are all still cobblestone, but it is obvious where they had to do restoration. The town overall is a mix of Spanish and Portuguese, because it changed hands between these two about seven times. The architecture shows it - the angles Portuguese roofs as compared to the flat Spanish roofs was most glaring difference I could comprehend. The Portuguese also made their windows and doors smaller. The Spanish had larger entrances because they brought their horses inside with them. :)
Alright, I am off to bed. Estoy infermo y es no divertido.
abrazos
There was also a farm visit schedule, but we had to cancel it due to delayed arrival. The area is a big with dairy cattle.
