We decided to come to Fiji because it was offered as a free stopover on our flight from LA to Australia. Eleven months ago when our travel agent asked us how much time we wanted to stay in Fiji, we said 3 weeks. Why not? The only thing we knew was that it has amazing looking beaches.
Now we've come to discover that Fiji is made up of hundreds of little islands and the best beaches and diving are at the northern islands. The only way to get up there is to fly (quick and easy) or take a boat, which takes over 5 hours. More to the point, both options are expensive when you're on a backpacker budget.
Fiji in general is not cheap and all the affordable islands that backpackers visit are very rustic. As in no electricity after 10pm, sand floor hut rooms, bad food, lots of bugs...not my kinda place. So we're going to have to fork out a lot more money on accommodation than we would like and at these prices our money won't last three weeks.
So we've changed our flights and now we'll spend 12 days here and we'll stick to the islands closest to the main island.
