Although it's a long bus ride to get to Mombasa, it's an overnight trip so you don't lose any days travelling which is cool. Also, you don't have to pay for accommodation for that night so it's a good idea all round. (if you can sleep) The ride was very bumpy for the first 45min. then the road smoothed out and we we’re able to get some shut eye.
We arrive in Mombasa around 7am.
Aziz and Bobbi told us to try an area in the north of Mombasa called Nyali, as the beach is nice and there's some affordable accommodation around. Not having any other plans, this was some really useful advice and as soon as we grab a taxi, we're on our way there.
1pm we’re on the beach.
Nyali beach turns out to be just as picturesque as promised and the warm, clear turquoise water is just as you'd imagine when thinking about the Indian Ocean. The only slight issue to contend with is the tide being a couple of hundred meters out. So rather than dumping our things down on a non-existent sun lounger, we carry our bags through the shallow waters and hire a pedal boat instead. What a perfect induction to the East African coast line, pedaling our way through water so clear that we can see the red sea urchins sitting on the bottom.
After our pedal boat ride, with the sun taking its toll, we go in search of the nearest bar and a well-earned drink. Then Alicia is eager to get back to the hotel to see what’s happening with the elections…
