143 years from the abolition of slavery to the first black president-elect.

I suspect that in the far future, for those who didn't have to live through it, there will be amazement at the rapid speed of change.

I can't imagine that a similar situation could occur in Australia any time soon.

It's a pity that both Rudd and Obama have inherited the worst global financial mess in decades, not to mention the war in Iraq. I hope that in another 3 and 4 years people remember they didn't actually create these problems, but were just left to deal with the aftermath.

But voters memories are short.
